Changes to OzTeX 1.6 ==================== TeX changes ———– • TeX now allows up to 32766 hyphenation pattern memory ops per language (the old limit of 255 was too small for some languages). A small bonus of this change is that the font_max limit has increased from 255 to 256. • The TFMs for circle10 and circlew10 are now called lcircle10 and lcirclew10. These are the font names used in the standard LaTeX distribution. I decided not to release new PK archives, so please update the corresponding font names in your own set of PK files; only a dozen or so files need to be renamed. • TeX has been updated to version 3.1415. TeX.pool (in the TeX-formats folder) has changed and version 3.1415 of plain.tex has been added to the Plain sub-folder in TeX-inputs. • Fixed a nasty bug in TeX that caused strange character substitutions at the start of a word (thanks to Ole Michael Selberg for providing the vital clue). The bug only occurred if you increased the font_mem_size parameter and then used an existing format file. People using older versions of OzTeX will have to rebuild their format files if they increase font_mem_size. • LaTeX2e is now provided in the OzTeX distribution. It includes an updated version of NFSS and many other important new features (see features.tex in the new LaTeX2e sub-folder in TeX-inputs). Full documentation for LaTeX2e can be found in "The LaTeX Companion" by Michel Goosens, Frank Mittelbach and Alexander Samarin, published by Addison-Wesley, and in Leslie Lamport's new LaTeX book (to be published soon). LaTeX2e is an important stepping stone on the way to LaTeX3, so all LaTeX users are strongly advised to make the switch soon — the old LaTeX will NOT be distributed in future versions of OzTeX. The old NFSS-LaTeX format and related files have been removed. The PSNFSS folder in TeX-inputs has been replaced by a new PSNFSS2e folder which contains the psnfss package for using PostScript fonts with LaTeX2e. See psnfss2e.tex in the new folder for more details. A new set of PostScript TFMs and VFs are distributed with OzTeX. They should fix the problems and inconsistencies found in the PostScript fonts distributed with OzTeX 1.6. The new fonts were created by Sebastian Rahtz for the psnfss package using Alan Jeffrey's fontinst macros. I've also added slanted versions of ptmr, ptmb and psyr. Both OT1 and T1 font encodings are available. The default encoding is OT1; this is the old TeX text font encoding described in The TeXbook. The T1 (Cork) encoding is the new TeX text font encoding for 256-character fonts. The T1-encoded TFMs and VFs have names ending in "q". See test0.tex in the PSNFSS2e folder for how to select either encoding. Note that "raw" TFMs are now indicated by names of the form "*0.tfm" (they used to be "r*.tfm"). NFSS-LaTeX input files that use the old PSNFSS macros will need to be modified to work with LaTeX2e and the new psnfss package. For example, should be changed to T1
